Signal monitoring applications can range from compliance of carrier-specific transmissions to the discovery and location of unknown or illegal transmitters. Traditional methods for signal monitoring rely on high performance spectrum analyzers and digitizers often operating as a standalone system.Sensor network is a newly developed distributed system for information sensing and processing. The sensor network has great application prospects and can be wildly used in military, medical treatment, environment monitoring and so on. This article described a technology based RF sensors network to improve the detection capabilities of monitoring systems and a method for determining the geo-location of wireless emitters has been introduced. It is very significant that use high density and low-cost RF Sensors to monitoring over a large geographic area. This article described the architecture of the monitor system after studying the traditional rack-mounted surveillance system. The general concept for implementing a distributed signal monitoring system is to deploy a higher density of low-cost RF sensors placed physically closer to the intended emitters and to have all the advanced signal processing functions operate on the sampled data at a common, centrally located server. It researches the key technologies such as sensor synchronization, emitter geo-location algorithm (TDOA, Time Difference of arrival), methods for signal identification and so on.This article gets good result of the emitter geo-location based on the actual RF sensors deployment in the city environment. It analyzes the differences between the broadband and narrowband signals positioning according to the experiment data. It also improves the measurement to increases the probability of intercept.
