Shortwave communication plays an irreplaceable role both in military and civil areas, and the location information of unknown shortwave emitters is of great value. Therefore,it is very important to investigate the theory and method of locating unknown shortwave emitters in short wave communication. In this paper,we mainly investigate the unknown shortwave emitter localization problem by ionospheric propagation modeling using sensor network Time Difference of Arrival(TDOA)measurements in the layered structure of the ionosphere. The work I did and the main contribution are as follows: 1)Combining with TDOA localization theory, the location problem of unknown shortwave emitters can be modeled based on the ionospheric propagation time delay modeling, which can be described as a complex nonlinear optimization problem.2)The limiting performance analysis of this location problem is given by the Cramer-Rao Bound(CRB)formula.3)we propose a method to solve the location problem of unknown shortwave emitters, including the least squares method, the univariate search method and the Newton second-order iterative algorithm. And,the location problem of unknown shortwave emitters is described as a semi-definite programming problem, and the value of emitters location estimation is obtained by using the simulation tool.4)We investigate the joint estimation of unknown shortwave emitter location and ionospheric parameters in the case of unknown ionospheric parameters. In different scenarios,Monte Carlo(MC)simulation experiments carried out a large number of data simulation. The simulation results show that solving the unknown shortwave emitter localization problem by ionospheric propagation modeling using sensor network TDOA measurements has high accuracy. In addition, this method is robust to high TDOA measurement error.
