Since early digital microwave transmission devices lack network interfaces, it cannot carry on network management by connecting to the Internet. With the increasing of the number of network devices and the expansion of network scale, through the serial port on the device management means a serious impediment to the network management efficiency. In this paper, firstly, the application requirements of digital microwave transmission devices are analyzed then a complete solution to design and implement the network management system is proposed. In hardware, the system consists of two CPU. One CPU achieves the function of basic digital microwave transmission and the other deals with the function of network management, the dual CPU transfers information through a serial port. This mode of dual-CPU simplifies the entire system design and reduces the coupling between modules. In software, the system implements both the SNMP protocol and the HTTP protocol simultaneously, so the system possess of advantages of these two protocols. After that, how to port the embedded Linux operating system is introduced, and then three main software modules are also discussed in detail, which include serial communication module, SNMP Agent module and Web server module.Experimental results show that the system enhances network management capabilities to the devices through Internet, and achieves the ability of quick upgrade for the digital microwave transmission devices. Furthermore, the system satisfies the demand of digital microwave transmission network devices, and provides a common solution to upgrade embedded devices with a serial port.
