Distributed base station stands for the basic direction of "the next generation stations", it has advantages of low cost, strong environment adaptable, engineering construction convenient. Especially, distributed base station will get very widely used in the future of third generation (3G) mobile networks. Distributed BS contains baseband resource pool (BBU) and Radio Remote Unit (RRU).The software and hardware implementation of the digital intermediate frequency in Wimax system is studied in the paper which is based on RRU which is the part of the distributed BS. The design mainly includes Digital Up Convertion (DUC), Digital Down Convertion (DDC), power detection, Crest Factor Reduction (CFR), and digital predistortion (DPD) etc. Software realization is used by QuartusII 8.0 that is belonged to the company of Altera. It designs functions of a compatible of four signals in different bandwidth, CFR and various power detections with a switch control method of design. Hardware realization is used by FPGA of Altera's series of StratixIII, sintering file will be downloaded to the chip by EPLD or JTAC line, real-time testing different capabilities of four different bandwidth signals'DUC/DDC, CFR, power detections and predistortion. The design of the software and hardware realize occupies less resource, saving more cost. Through laboratory test and alignment, the performance of the design of intermediate frequency system meets each index. System is running well, strong stability, strong anti-jamming capability, cost-effective, with the field operation conditions.
