With the development of IP trend of optical network, video and IPTV (Interactive Personality TV) services, transmission network develops into the direction of high speed and high capacity, and also it should have good survivability and reliability. The present SDH(Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) and WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) network based on broadband services can't meet the requirement of big granularity transmission : small granularity of SDH can't solve the the problem of traffic cross dispatch;WDM lacks the ability of node dispatch,networking and efficient network administration and maintenance. OTN have the advantages of both SDH and WDM. As a novel transmission technology,it must carry the Ethernent service.The link convergence of 10Gb/s Ethernet gets over its limitation, so comes up with 40GbE, Out of two aspects of consideration by adopting 40G OTN technology:(1)There are 2 or 3 ECMP(Equal Cost Multi-Path routing) links,if link rate is 10G, the biggest bandwidth is 80G-100G, if each link rate is 40G,the bandwidth reaches 640G; (2)The cost of 40G transmission equipments and 40G routers is less than the cost of same capacity by using 10G transmission equipments and 10G routers.So it can reduce the number of 10G links by adopting 40G links,simplify network structure and improve network expansibility ,also can simplify the location and recovery of network faults.Chapter 1 of this thesis, first introduced the situation of study and trend of development of OTN technology and 40Gb/s Ethernet, and then proposed the content and structure of this thesis; chapter 2 introduced the OTN layed structure , its frame structure and key technologies of Ethernet based on ITU-T G.709 standard and IEEE802.3 protocol, then brought forward 40GbE over OTN realization mechanism; chapter 3 discusses the hardware realization of 40GbE over OTN ; chapter 4 sets up an experiment to test the hardware design, the results show that the indexes meet the requirements, so it can put into use; chapter 5 of the text are summarized.
