Since IPv4 was born in the seventies of the 20th century, with the development rapidly of Internet, the question that IP address will exhausted and the route form expand rapidly is outstanding day by day. In order to solve the enormous challenges of Internet at present, IETF makes and perfects new generation protocol, namely IPv6. IPv6 protocol draws advantage of IPv4 and remedy it weakness, such as solving address exhausted problem, having built-in security and mobile .The problem that we pay close attention to isn't that it is should or not to be transferred from IPv4 to IPv6, but how to be advance gradually and injury transferred from IPv4 to IPv6, reduce the cost of the transition as much as possible at the same time . The new characteristic of IPv6 protocol has offered the support of wider prospect and perfection for application and development of next generation Internet. This text has done the work of the following aspects mainly: 1. Research this new protocol of IPv6, analyzed and compared the similarities and differences between IPv4 and IPv6, through analyzing the characteristic and technical specification of IPv6, studying and comparing the merit and disadvantage of several kinds of transition technology. 2. Discussed the tactics of IPv6 address management, analyzed the most important neighbor discovery protocol and stateless autoconfiguration and stateful autoconfigruration in IPv6. 3. This text still deeper analysed difference between DHCPv4 and DHCPv6, utilize the operation principle and state changes picture, has research the state changes of DHCPV6 client and server and information exchange course more completely, and tentatively realize the function of DHCPv6.
