The traditional method of describing the ocean natural geographic environment is realized by chart. But users cannot obtain ocean geographic information immediately from not only paper chart but also electronic chart. And the traditional expressing method of chart demands users to have some professional chart knowledge. How to import virtual reality technique into the field of 3D chart's real-time display, develop the simulation system about virtual ocean environment with reality, realize 3D scene of ocean environment, are gradually becoming a study field that peoples concern.The main contents and results of research in this paper are shown as the following:The basic techniques of modeling and simulation are studied, and by applying these techniques, the modeling and simulation of ocean environment are realized, simultaneously, auto-modeling of scene is realized according to the entities' classification.The method of deriving original ocean geographic information database from real electronic chart is studied; the classification and storage of original database of geographic elements are realized by making use of database technique; the conversion of ocean elevation data's format is accomplished. All above build the foundation for 3D modeling and software developing consequently.MultiGen-Paradigm corporation's modeling software named Creator is used, the modeling of all entities and 3D terrain in virtual ocean environment is accomplished. Classification and management of 3D models of ocean geographic information are implemented.In the course of 3D scene simulation, Vega is utilized to develop the project. The building of 3D scene is done, which includes the simulation of static and dynamic ocean surface, realization of ocean wave, simulation of bow wave and stern wake, utilization of lighting and material, simulation of cloud and fog, kinematics' modeling of submarine etc. The function of adding, revising and deleting geographic information elements is designed and realized. And the virtualocean environment can be displayed in different details.The theory of Large Area Database Management (LADBM) is introduced. And LADBM is realized.In this scene system, Derive ocean geographic information database from actual electronic chart data, and according to these database build ocean terrain and entity model database. Realize the simulations of space effect under water, ocean surface rendering, LADBM(Large Area Database Management), interaction with 2D electronic chart, etc. Meet the need of ocean environment simulation for reality and real-time, it is possible to be extended and applied in some system that contains virtual ocean war field.
