Archives consist of carrier material bearing the archives content and record material reflecting archives content. At present, most of the archives still take paper archives as the core. The key to protecting paper archives lies in promoting its durability, and the external cause affecting the durability of paper archives is mostly the temperature and humidity of the archives storeroom.The dissertation aims at studying the relativity between the temperature and humidity of archive storehouse and durability of paper archives by experimentation. According to the practical situation of the temperature and humidity in the archives storehouse, this dissertation designs four kinds of combinations of different temperature and humidity; namely, low temperature and low humidity (10℃, 30%), middle temperature and low humidity (20℃, 30%), middle temperature and middle humidity (20℃, 50%) and high temperature and high humidity (30℃, 70%) . In particular, it designs a group of fluctuation combination of temperature and humidity (10~30℃, 30~70%) as the external surroundings. Each combination is dealt with 240 hours.Paper can be divided into different categories according to different criteria. Generally, it can be classified as machine paper and handwork paper according to the producing way. By this criterion, the representative paper among handwork paper and machine paper is chosen in this experiment; that is, rice paper of the highest quality from handwork paper, and duplicating paper(old), newsprint and writing paper from machine paper. Paper being dealt with shall be tested by different physical-chemical indexes such as tensile strength, anti-bending capability, PH value and so on. As for tensile strength and anti-bending capability, respective tests shall be taken lengthways and crosswise.The endurance of archives handwriting material is also an important element related to the longevity of paper archives. In this experiment, handwritings of water-soluble blue-black ink, pure-blue ink, red ink and oil-soluble ball-point penare chosen as samples. After these samples being dealt with different temperature and humidity, a chromatism test shall be performed. The physics and chemistry index adopts arithmetic mean in the course of data processing.Based on the experimental analysis, I draw following conclusions: Firstly, compared with the other four combinations, the combination of low temperature and low humidity has the minimum effect on paper archives, and the physic-chemical index of its paper and handwriting takes the smallest change, while the combination of high temperature and high humidity, and of fluctuant temperature and humidity have the most disadvantageous effect on the durability of paper archives. Secondly, in the same temperature and humidity, the white degree and PH value of the same type of paper takes the minor changes, and the tensile strength and anti-bending capability the bigger changes. Thirdly, under the same temperature and humidity, the rice paper has the smallest change among the different types of paper, and newsprint and writing paper have the bigger changes. Fourthly, among the four samples of handwriting, the one of blue-black ink has the biggest change, red ink second-class, and ball-point pen smallest.Based on experimental results, due to climate and temperature and humidity in our country, the author puts forward several points on the present temperature and humidity 's criterion and the realization of low temperature and low humidity of storehouse: Firstly, it is unreasonable for the whole nation to adopt the same temperature and humidity criterion. The best way is to work out the criterion of temperature and humidity in the light of local conditions, and the temperature and humidity of the storehouse can be set a bit lower. Secondly, "prevention first, prevention along with regulation" is the essential principle of archives prevention technology. In order to keep low temperature and low humidity in the storehouse, we shall in the first place adopt the fencing structure to prevent from being too hot and too moist, and, in the second place, we shall, according to practical situations, make full use of measures such as, obturation, ventilation and air-condition, to control the temperature and humidity of the storeroom.
