In recent years, with the rapid development of economy, as a convenient and fast modern vehicle, the automobile gets into good graces by more and more people. However, at the same time, people are bothered by the complex traffic road and serious traffic jam, also, great economic loss is due to the inefficient traffic. So, it is very important to develop the ITS(intelligent traffic system), and the vehicle positioning navigation system is a crucial component of ITS, whose main function is to supply the drivers with their position, velocity, moving direction and the surrounding geographic circumstance information for their fast, safe and accurate arrival by the aid of electronic map. Therefore, vehicle positioning navigation system plays an important role in vehicle scheduling and traffic management.Through the research on the development and application of vehicle positioning navigation system in China and abroad, the present thesis studies its relevant theories and basic development method, then, it discusses GPS/GIS application on this system.According to function requirement for vehicle positioning navigation system, software has been designed by GIS tools and Visual C++. The thesis puts forward the key technology involved and the relevant solution progressively according to development order of the system. The software can receive GPS positioning data and process it, such as transformation of data format and coordinate system and projection. Discuss the data model and structure of GIS electronic map, design digital map by GIS tools, draw many map layers and establish road database. The software realize the basic function of navigation electronic map> such as scale and scan of electronic map, any geography object in electronic map is searched quickly, help the driver to show the automobile position in real time and display the automobile track. In order to revise the error of GPS , an improved algorithm of map-matching based on the distance projection is applied to the vehicle navigation system.
