At present, in the TCP/IP protocol based network, there are several ways to determine the next hop of a terminal to its IP destination. The usual means include running dynamic routing protocol or configuring static default route. Most of the operating system platforms of terminals don't support the dynamic routing protocols. In addition, even these platforms support such protocols, they still shall be restricted by such problems as administrative overhead, processing overhead, as well as security issues. It's common to configure the terminals with the static routing. In this method, a default gateway is appointed for the terminal device. But the disadvantage of it is that the gateway shall get into the single-point failure easily. The Hot Standby Routing technology is designed for resolving the single-point failure of gateway. This technology collects several routers into a group, and regards all of them as a virtual router. In this technology, the virtual router forwards the message it received from the terminal. At any time, only one actual router in the group operates as the virtual router. If the one acting as the virtual router breaks down, one of the other routers will replace it and continues to work. Therefore, the connectivity of the terminals won't be affected greatly. This paper implements the Hot Standby Routing technology in the core routing switch, through the comprehensive researching of the Hot Standby Routing technology as well as the full understanding of the operation principle of switch. The major achievements in this paper include:1. Implement the Hot Standby Routing Protocol in the core routing switch, and replant it to the router platform.2. The Hot Standby Routing function of the device has been tested...
