Internet, was mainly developed in late 1970s for Text-oriented network applications. But with the multimedia network applications widely used, the "best effort" service provided by Internet is difficult to meet the QoS requirements of new data-streams. Although the Internet communities try to improve the QoS through a variety of technologies, the low efficiency of the existing 3-layers user-data switching platform is difficult to fundamentally solve the problem radically. For these reasons, Sichuan Network Communication Technology Laboratory has created a new network architecture called Single Physical Layer User-data Switching Platform Architecture (SUPA). SUPANET (SUPA NETwork) keeps interoperation with Internet by adopting the out-band sigaling concept to keep the existing protocol stacks of Internet in the Signaling & Management platform (S&M- platform), and simplifies User-data switching platform (U-platform) into a single physical layer platform by using Ethernet-oriented Physical Frame Timeslot Switching (EPFTS). These solutions can make a QoS-guaranteed, connection-oriented sevice for SUPANET users. The core study of this paper is the realization of Virtual Router (VR) technology on S&M-Platform. Making use of the characteristics of EPFTS and out-band signaling in SUPANET, the basic idea is that several VRs can be virtualized from a SUPANET physical router which is compatible with the Internet router protocol stack, in order to enhance the network security and make management more directional in SUPANET. Every VR has its own instance of Routing Protocol, dedicated interface, buffer, address space. A Virtual Router Identifier (VRI) is distributed to the related user. Therefore, several "user groups" appear in an original physical router in SUPANET.In this paper, the study focuses on the architecture of Virtual Router, the process of the Routing Table's updating and the principles of communication between different VRs in S&M-platform. The relative outcomes may supplies a reference for the future research. The author's main contributions can be summarized as follows:A: design in architecture of SUPANET VR.B: discussion and design in the mechnism of Virtual Routing Table's creating and updating, and detailed discussion in the priciples of communication between VRs.C: simulation in the SUPANET VR Routing Table's updating with OPNET.
