New generation Internet requires the future routers with performance, scalability, availability and expansibility, which makes the router architecture more complex. In order to adapt to the requirements of new generation Internet, the router architecture has changed enormously, developing from the traditional single-router to the cluster-router. This thesis will research on the architecture of the cluster router and the key technologies of its platform.On the basis of analyzing the development of the router architecture, this thesis gives a Universal Cluster Router Architecture Model (UCRAM), and basic architectures of two control models(centralized control and distributed control) and two forward models(equal forward and unequal forward). In order to research on the distributed parallel routing protocol, this thesis has introduced an equal forward architecture cluster router----NewRouter, based on the two control models before. To implement its platform, we have solved two key problems of the cluster router: single view, dynamic transfer of the control access point. This thesis has introduced the implementation framework and technology details of NewRouter's platform. Using the technique of interfaces virtual global mapping and hierarchy coding, we achieve the single view of multi-nodes and the inner packets redirecting. Using the control packets redirecting technique based on control strategy table, we achieve the dynamic transfer of the control access point.We have integrated NewRouter's platform with the BGP routing protocol based on Zebra, implementing a prototype system of centralized control cluster router, and integrated NewRouter's platform with the distributed parallel BGP routing protocol, implementing a prototype system of distributed control cluster Router. At last, we have tested these two prototype system on function and performance, and compared with single software router and the subnet with some routers in performance testing. The result has indicated that NewRouter's platform has some reference value for the design and implementation of the cluster router architecture, and can be used as a platform to carry out other technology research on cluster routers.
