The CSCW (computer supported cooperative work) is a new research area, which studies that how does a group of participants work together and how does new technologies support the group cooperation activity. The essentials and aims of CSCW are to build a cooperative work environment in which participants can cooperatively work for an innovative product, a research project, or a complex scientific problem with others, by using multimedia technology and network communication technology. The CSCD (computer supported cooperative design) system is derived and developed from CSCW theory and its practice, and is a concrete application of CSCW. Based on the basic concepts, developing background, and recent trend of CSCW, this dissertation presents the system structure, the functional model, and the key techniques of the implementation of CSCD system. 1. A general architecture of CSCD system is proposed in the dissertation according to the framework of CSCW, which is an integration of group problem solving model, hierarchical coordination model, and communication model. The CSCD system consists of five parts: Application System (AS), Information Sharing (IS) platform, Cooperative Work (CW) platform, Collaborate Management (CM) platform, and Network Transfer (NT) platform. AS provides the system with design targets and strategies, IS is the basis of collaborative work, CW provides cooperation participants with tools and means, CM is to organize and coordinate the cooperative design process of each participants, and NT provides the support of information transmission. The architecture proposed has advantages that it not only considers the effective use of the engineering design information, and the advanced technology of CSCW is also embedded. 2. The dissertation starts with the investigation of an actual design enterprise, and a perfect multi-layer & multi-group cooperation design model that is built on the social organization relation, relationship of participants, and the implement process of design tasks is presented. Under the guidance of humanics, sociology, histology, and the science of cognition, the characteristics, requirements, processes and methods of design activity within a group of participants are analyzed, and a cooperative design model that is capable of describing the design style and requirement of participants and that it can be analyzed by workflow technology and object-oriented PetriNet technology is created. 3.
