As people recognized more about standards, open characters and future compatibility, of industrial automation, measurement and telecommunication, the technologies of CompactPCI/PXI are being rapidly admitted. Traditionally, every designer, who want to utilize those interface, have to make efforts to comprehend the protocol, specifications, principle and work modes of the CompactPCI/PXI. It caused high cost and low performance and efficiency.Base on the actual applications, this paper adopt a universal CompactPCI/PXI interface technology, which makes the interface can be use in both CompactPCI and PXI. In this paper, the electrical, mechanical and software specifications of Compact and PXI are briefly introduced; hotswap technologies are researched deeply. It detailedly describes the research of hardware and software.There are mainly two parts in the universal interface:One is hardware interface: The ASIC PCI9054 is used to manage the PCI bus. Hotswap control circuits are based on MIC2580A. Local bus, system reference clock, trigger bus and star trigger of PXI are reserved in the interface. A high speed and performance FPGA is used to manage the local chip selection, bus direction and the timing between the local bus and PCI9054.The other is software interface: interface drivers are designed, based on the Windows operate system. Local I/O and memory are dividedly mapped to the PCI's I/O and memory space. This paper also gives out the standard configuration, read and write functions, ensuring the designers need not to know much about the interface princples.To test the functions of the universal interface, the test circuits and software module, include LED; input, output and UART are also designed. The every function of the universal Compact/PXI interface has been simulated and debugged. Schematics, Printed Circuits Board and some practical pictures are presented in the addenda.Finally, the conclusions are drawn, and further research ideas brought forward, especially about the hotswap software development.
