With the development of multimedia, communications and storage technology, people are no longer satisfied with the monotony and passive mode to get information, as a part of the information highway, and the Video on Demand (VoD) system has got its rapid development.VOD Technology is a blending result of multiple subjects and fields such as computer technology ,network communication,multimedia technology and digital compression.It is also a very important and difficult subject.Through the reading of a great deal of the domestic and oversea literature of VOD technology , the concept and structure of a VOD system are first introduced in this paper,and then the current status and future development about it are described.The streaming media technology is a pupolar multimedia technology now and it is a base of the VOD system, so we analyze and research the technology of Streaming Media in the second chapter of this paper.Video server is the core of implement function of VOD system and guarantee of performance and quality,so it becomes the core of whole VOD system. After analyzing several hardware architectures of VS in detail,the key technologies and its strategies and arithmetic are researched in deeper degree,some my viewpoints and hypothesis are presented in the third chapter of this paper.In the fourth chapter of this paper ,it mainly introduces and discusses the develop -ment of researches about storage in the world, and compares the properties tradatiopal storage technology DAS(Direct Attached Storage), networks technology NAS (Net -works Attached Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Networks) .After researching the structures, performances,and characteristics in-depth, we put forwards the syncretize model of the NAS+SAN on the demand of mass data storage.According to the demand of VOD system for Qingdao University of Sience & Technology, we design a optimized VOD system of the architecture of Qingdao University of Sience & Technology in the end of this paper.
