Voice and video sharing services over Internet have been rising importantly and havebeen increasing their share in multimedia market. This is mainly due to the high processingcapability of smartphone and the huge amount of data accessible through current advancedradio access network, such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX and Long Term Evolution. With social networkapplication such as WhatsApp and WeChat, it has been easy to share voice and video withfriends. However, the limited memory capacity of smart phone become a big challenge whenend users are in need to download voice or video with high amount of data. On the otherhand, as the Internet voice and video are based on packet transmission, they are influencedby delays, transmissions errors, data losses and bandwidth limitations that can have adevastating effect on the perceived quality of the multimedia content. In this thesis, anandroid based application on a mobile device that connects to an HTTP server throughWLAN for video streaming, and a network emulator have been used to investigate the impactof network parameters on the quality of a streamed video. A mapping between the networksimpairments and the streaming quality in terms of waiting times and the number of playbackinterruption is given. In addition, an analysis of voice quality monitoring and control methods is performedfor Voice over Internet protocol. In order to keep the perceived voice quality at acceptablelevel, it is required to monitor network parameters by adjusting network settings as well asdifferent configurations at the terminal device. Voice quality prediction is a key procedure inmonitoring and control voice quality. However, it has been noticed that most used voicequality assessment models have drawbacks when it comes to voice quality prediction in real-time services. This thesis proposes a parameter-based method that can accurately predictvoice quality in order to monitor and control perceived voice quality for VoIP service andthus improve user satisfaction. The results of the thesis may serve Internet service Providersso that they could adjust their network characteristics in order to meet the challenges fromHTTP video and VoIP services.
