Digital image processing is a hotspot in research. Especially with the development of computer technology, micro-electronics and software more and more people are committing themselves to the research of digital image processing. So the edge detection of image now is being researched by many scientists. In textile-process enterprises, the detection and cleanup of impurity in cotton is puzzled people at all times for the reason of the work of the detection and cleanup of impure cotton are all done manually. As we all know, the efficiency of manual cleanup of impure in cotton is very low and at the same time the cost of it is very high. A set of automatic recognition system which used DSP and edge detection algorithm was designed. Not only can it reduce the cost, but also can improve the efficiency. I hope it can completely replace the manual detection in the future.In this article, the theories of digital image processing and image edge detection are introduced firstly. Then, the introduction of the automatic recognition system based on TI Company's TMS320C6711 is developed. Aimed at the detection of cotton, most of edge detection algorithms are analysed and simulated with Visual C++. Through all kinds of combination and comparison, an algorithm which fit to this system was found.At the end of this article, the paper is summarized.
