At present, the technology of image's identification on computer and the technology of detection and processing become more and more important to the industry of the textile. The reason is that we can pick foreign fibers in cotton by equipment instead of by hand on the stage of the impurities's testing on the cotton. With the rapid development of the technology on computer and the wide use of vc++6.0, the technology of digital image's processing have developed rapidly in the recent years. The research on the cotton of the impurities's testing emerged on the trend of the times.The research on the cotton of the impurities's testing is research that we proposed on the automatic detection of foreign fibers in cotton when various problems arise on the stage of the foreign fiber's testing on the cotton. With the rapid development of automated production, the research on the cotton of the impurities's testing plays a significant role in improving cotton's quality and reducing the cost of picking foreign fibers and shortening the cycle of production and improving economic efficiency, and become more widely used.We put forward a distinction algorithm between cotton and impurities after we do some research on digital image's processing. Before we write out the software of the appropriate algorithm on the cotton of the impurities's testing, we will analysis different colors and different texture between cotton and cotton's foreign fibers. This article will put forward a kind of method on detecting foreign fibers in cotton. The method is a recognition method for detecting edges which is based on statistic theory. It is mainly divided into nine steps: reading images of RAW format, changing images into gray images, demanding image's histogram, specifying image's histogram, smoothing the images, detecting the image's edge by Laplace, processing the images in morphology, determining the maximum threshold of the pixel in some region, distinguishing foreign fibers by the maximum threshold of some region. We write out the corresponding software program of the method of every step by vc++6.0.
