In recent years, with the rapid development of computer network, the network management becomes more and more important. In the early period of network management, network administrator uses Ping command to supervise the network, but nowadays it is not enough only to use such simple tools, because the scale of network is much larger then ever and the structure of network is much more complicated than ever. Now people need professional network management software to supervise the network. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is proposed by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) for administering the routers on the Internet. Revised by two times, SNMP now is the actually Industry standard protocol of network management, which is one of the indispensable protocol designing network management software. SNMP has the characters of simple, convenience and utility. The company overseas started the development of network management software in 1980's and they accumulate a lot of experience about developing. However, the development in our country is just beginning. It is meaningful for our country to study the technology of network management software developing and develop the native network management software which is fit for our situation. This thesis discusses the basic concept of SNMP and the framework of SNMP, which aim at the native small-sized and medium-sized enterprise. Firstly, the thesis discusses the main part of SNMP framework, which are SMI, MIB and SNMP. SNMP's version has been developed from version 1 to version 3. I also compare these versions. Secondly, the thesis discusses the design of network management software based SNMP protocol. There are four parts: requirement analysis, system structure, and module design and topology discovery method. Thirdly, this thesis shows the classes design, which is Object Oriented class design process and discusses two details in Ping command design which is the core module of topology discovery: the use of Critical Section and the calculation of sub network address list Finally, this thesis discuss the possible develop direction of network management.
