As the data in the computer is more important than the computer system itself, disaster-tolerant has been put more attention in recent years. As the data replication technology has the advantage of dynamic implement and online backup, it will take the place of the traditional disaster-tolerant technology. Based on the current replication technologies and the Logic Volume Manager (LVM) on Linux, we have designed and implemented a reliable, efficient disaster-tolerant system — Logic Volume Replicator (short as LVR) which cans consistently mirrors data over any IP network for maximum business continuity. The innovations of LVR system are the technology of embedding volume replication module in Linux system, the protocol of remote replication based on volumes, the method of keeping the data consistency and data view consistency in replication volume group, disaster recovery mechanism and snapshot backup mechanism and so on.In this paper, we have discussed and researched the data replication technology and Logical volume manager. And then we have designed the framework of LVR system and the detail of implementation. The major content is summarized as below:(1) We have analyzed the basic theory of LVR and designed several functional modules for it. And then we have fount the way to keep the data consistency during data replication.(2) We have designed and implemented the distant replication protocol of LVR system. And we have given the way to handle many problems during the data transmission.(3) We have designed and implemented the state machine for LVR system. The machine guides LVR system to the correct state after an error. At the same time, LVR system can find the method to get out of these failures by the state machine.(4) At last, we have optimized LVR system according to its feature.
