Companies today rely to an unprecedented extent on online, frequently accessed, constantly changing data to run their businesses. Unplanned events that inhibit the availability of this data can seriously damage business operations. Additionally, any permanent data loss, from natural disaster or any other source, will likely have serious negative consequences for the continued viability of a business. Therefore, when disaster strikes, companies must be prepared to eliminate or minimize data loss, and recover quickly with useable data.Even with the most well executed backup strategy, restoring from tape usually results several hours of lost data. For many environments this kind of data loss is unacceptable. A real-time disaster tolerance solution is required for these environments. It not only minimizes or eliminates data loss, but also enables rapid recovery when compared to sconventional bulk data transfer from sequential media. The replica data is available and ready for use on disk at a disaster-safe location.Based on the current replication technologies and the Logic Volume Manager (LVM) on Linux, areliable, efficient disaster tolerance system----Logic Volume Replicator (LVR)----is designed and implemented, which cans consistently mirrors data over any IP network for maximum business continuity. LVR is an elegant, flexible storage-independent solution that enables full disaster recovery when data currency and availability are paramount. This paper analyzes and discusses the design target, system function, implementation methods of LVR. My main works and research achievements are as follows:1. I investigate in detail the Logic volume manager of Linux, the process communication mechanism and cache mechanism, in addition, summarize the existent replication technologies.2. I design LVR, classify its functions into several modules and implement them respectively as a team member. I program powerful user commands to ensure the effective system management.3. I construct a high availability disaster tolerance system based on LVR.
