With the rapid development in the area of information technology, multimedia communication has been a new way of human intercommunion. Specially, digital video plays a more and more important role in information society. The advancements of computer technology, communication technology, microelectronics technology, network technology make real-time video compression and transportation possible. Consequently, People enjoy the convenience made by technology advances.This dissertation presents the study of several issues in video coding and its hardware implementation. A novel system on chip(SOC) is proposed based on the ISO/IEC MPEG-4. We do this by adopting FPGA plus ARM. the FPGA chip deals with all procedures in MPEG-4 video compression system, such as motion estimation, DCT/IDCT, and picture reconstruction, variable length coding, bit stream multi-complex, etc;while the ARM CPU deals with rate control and the parameters intializtion of the whole coding system. Some key techniques, such as DCT/IDCT, quantization/inverse quantization and intra DC/AC prediction, are studied in detail. The hardware design of witch is presented based on theory.In this dissertation, we describe the basic principle of MPEG-4, system framework of MPEG-4 encoder and component function, DCTQ principle and hardware implementation. Some simulation results and practical results are shown;Finally a roughly study of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is presented, specially,integer transfor and intra prediction are studied in detail.
