Responding to multimedia technology rapidly developing and application domain promptly enlarging,many multimedia compression and coding standards progress and perfect continuously. Among them,MPEG-4 plays an important role in the multimedia field. Due to its object-based idea,it has the virtue of high compression ratio,scalability,inter-activity with users and so on. For this reason,MPEG-4 indicates the tendency of the multimedia compression and coding technique. So researching the standard MPEG-4 is obviously important for our national internationalizing multimedia technology development 。Coding technology in MPEG-4 standard is confidential, so it is not used widely in multimedia application. If MPEG-4 coder with property right is developed, this will lay the foundation for the later product development and can build a research platform for studying arithmetic, improvement, validation and testing. For this reason, the work is completed as follows: Firstly, the key technology of MPEG-4 is analyzed and researched in details, including motion estimation, texture coding and so on. High-efficient compression and coding method based on object is put forward. Secondly, according to the framework offered by VM of MPEG-4 standard and Microsoft, MPEG-4 coder is completed with software and its performance is analyzed. Lastly, we put forward to some ideas for the application of MPEG-4 coder and analyzed its realtime realization.
