When we appraise chips of the same function, area will be a very important index sign, just like frequency and power consumption. To a commercial chip, area is a crucial factor, because the price of chip is decided by it. In ASIC architecture design, it is important to decrease chip's area by decrease the function unit(adder, multiplier, etc.). The reusable technology by function unit and architecture is used to analyze the similarity of function units and architectures in modules and systems. By analyzing the similarity, we can implement many operations on one function unit. By this, we can implement our chip in small chip area. The article analyzes the reusable technology's methodology and design flow. At the same time, we analyzed the speed requirement.IC size is becoming bigger and more complex with ASIC technology's improvement. At the same time, the drastic competition in market makes it nessisary to bring chips earlier. As a result, we must improve our design ability. IP reuse is the key to solve this problem. This article analyzes the reusable technology by IP through IP standard, IP develop strategy, IP module design, IP library development and system design, etc.This article analyzes the reusable technology's implement in video codec chips by analyzing the reusable implement of transform uint and intra prediction unit.Transform is a unit with a great deal of operations and it has a high requirement of speed. Its operation is orderly and the operations are similarly, some standards are conformable, so we can use the reusable technology to implement them. We implement 3 integer transforms in H.264 with one reusable architecture, and 2 integer transforms, which block are not the same in size, in H.264 High Profile with one reusable architecture, and implement 2-D IDCT and IICT with two architecture. We also ayalize the IP core design, which can used in IDCT and IICT.Intra prediction is used in decoder and encoder. But the two implement hava different requirement and should be implemented with different method. We implement intra prediction in AVS decoder by the reusable technology by function unit and intra prediction in H.264 encoder by the reusable technology by architecture.
