With the rapid development of broadband network and multimedia technologies, VOD(Video-on-Demand) has been applied more and more widely, and also it has been familiar to people day by day. The phenomenal prevalence of the intelligent communities brings VOD service expansive future prospects; the deep development of broadband access technologies enables people to enjoy VOD service of high quality.A Video-on-demand system is composed of three subsystems: server, multimedia transferring network and client. The key challenge in Video-On-Demand system is to maximize the number of simultaneous served clients, to transfer flowing real-time video stream more efficiently at the limited hardware condition, and to provide good interaction to get users' satisfaction. In this thesis, we carry out a deep study on these questions.This thesis mainly introduces and illustrates the Ethernet based intelligent community VOD system designed and developed, including the implementation and optimization of the system.It consists of eight chapters. The first chapter analyzes VOD system in detail covering the constitution, categorization, key technology, production and prospect. The second chapter introduces the running environment of VOD system-the intelligent community broadband access system. The third chapter describes the frame of the VOD system as a whole. Chapter four deeply researches about the VOD server, emphatically discusses the implementation of server and the optimization of system performance. Chapter five elaborates MPEG-4 and the real-time transferring of MPEG-4 media. Chapter six introduces the implementation of the client. Chapter seven researches program management, user management and service charge respectively. The last chapter is a general statement of the system and future work.
