With the rapid development of multimedia and network communication technology, video, image, computer vision, multimedia database and network technology have been combined greatly, thus, they have been involved in every aspect of national economy and social life. Because we have made great progress in digital multimedia compression algorithm, it is possible that high quality video can be transferred with low bit rate in present network. At the same time, the development of VLSI helps us to realize complex algorithm effectively. The establishment of international standard also set up a foundation for various companies and video providers.Based on an overview of the development of video compression standard and video processing, pointing to the feature of MPEG-4 that it can realize great compression ration with high quality, a new video compression system using VW2010 chip is provided. After the discussion of the chip's performance and characters, a new hardware design option with FPGA technology is provided. The process of software design is described in detail. Finally, from analyzing the relative images, the results proved the feasibility of this system.
