Responding tomultimedia technology rapidly developing and application domain promptly enlarging, many multimedia compression and coding standards progress and prefect continuously. Among them, MPEG-4 plays an important role in the multimedia field. Due to its object-based idea, it has the virtue of high compression ratio, scalability, inter-activity with users and so on. For this reason, MPEG-4 indicates the tendency of the multimedia compression and coding technique. Thus, it is a significant work to understand and grasp the development tendency of MPEG-4 in time, and to grasp its core tendency, and to innovate and develop in certain essential domain with practical applications.Firstly, the video compression and MPEG-4 standard is introduced. Secondly, the key algorithm of MPEG-4 video compression is demonstrated in details, the key technology of MPEG-4 is analyzed and researched in details, including motion estimation, texture coding, bitrate control and so on, at the same time, the key algorithm is proposed and implemented. Lastly, according to the framework offered by VM of MPEG-4 standard and Microsoft, MPEG-4 coder is completed with software and its performance is analyzed.
