As a guarantee of good order, protocol controls the data transmission in a network. With the role played by the network in each field is becoming more and more important, the research on protocols becomes more useful too. In numerous research approaches, it is effectual to try to design and implement a protocol in practice. This way can not only tell the meaning and the main contents of a protocol, but also can display the determinant of it. These are very helpful in understanding and analyzing other protocols.After analyzing three gigabit protocols for SAN, this dissertation defines that the connection protocol is a protocol which is mainly composed by part of the physical layer and the data link layer in the OSI reference model and introduces that hardware is the trend of the protocol implementation. Then the paper gives an explicit research task: design and implementation of a connection protocol for a network which uses DDR interface to realize interconnection.Next, based on network topological structure, data encoding/decoding, control information, addressing, parallel transport, data encapsulation, error detecting, flow control and upper-layer protocol support, etc., this dissertation discusses the connection protocol designed for the particular network and provides the design reason in detail. Meanwhile, it also describes the link initialization and data transmission process by using finite state machine.After that, the paper provides how to implement the connection protocol by using FPGA. The kernel of this part is the data link protocol. Output/input and internal structure of the send/receive module, control signal provided by micro program, FSM described by Verilog, buffer state register access control algorithm, etc., are all described in detail.Finally, the dissertation describes the method to simulation and test the connection protocol. It analyzes the result, summarizes the whole paper, and gives some aspects of the future research work.
