With the rapid development of Internet/Intranet, network is becoming larger and more complex. The modern communication environment is becoming increasingly heterogeneous and large. Due to the increasing use of heterogeneous computing environments, network management becomes more and more difficult. Increasing expectation of reliability and quality of service by users makes it even harder. There is a need for flexible network management to efficiently manage today's complex diverse networks. Conventional network management is based on SNMP and often runs in a centralized manner. Although the Centralized management approach gives network administrators an advantage of managing the whole network from a single place, it can decrease information bottleneck and excessive processing load at the manager and heavy usage of network bandwidth. An alternative approach is distributed network management, in which the centralized management strategy is replaced by interoperable management systems. Distributed management solves the problems due to centralized management to some extent. However, it still has some drawbacks like scalability and complex coordination mechanisms between management stations, the latest trend is to exploit mobile agent technology in managing large heterogeneous networks of today's world.Mobile agents could be viewed as mobile programs that roam in a network, perform duties on behalf of their creators and returning to the creator after having performed the duties assigned to it. These mobile software entries have the ability to carry logic and data along with them. Mobile agents have many advantages like reducing the network traffic, overcoming network latency, asynchronous and autonomous execution, dynamic adoption, fault tolerance and robustness. Mobile agents are equipped with network management managed nodes; moreover, mobile agents can move from one node to another and manage the node that they got to. Having researched how Mobile Agent is used in network management now, in this paper we proposed a Mobile Agent and Multi-agent based Network management framework (DANMA) according to the need of the network management, which takes advantage of the mobile agent to manage network more quickly and more flexibly. Mobile agents in DANMA for network management tend to monitor and control networked devices on site and consequently save the manager capacity and network bandwidth. The DANMA architecture is a hybrid model. It provides an additional network management interface to administrators atop SNMP layer so that the administrator can have the flexibility of using a most appropriate management approach according to the network characteristic and nature of management activities. In this paper we have illustrated broadcast and Itinerary network management models and put forward three kinds of mobile agents.
