In the past ten years, with the unceasing extension of computer networks and fast development of large scale interrelated networks(For example, Internet), routing technology are becoming the crucial part of networking technologies and consequently router will be the most important network device. The requirements of users add power to the development of routing technology and to the popularization of routers. People are not satisfied with the shared information only within local network. Instead, they hope to make best use of all kinds of the Internet resources from all around the world. As to current situation, for any kind of computer networks(such as enterprise LAN, campus LAN and intelligent tower), they can't work without routers regardless what technology they will adopt, the technologies of Ethernet, FDDI or ATM. RIP is widely used because of its reliability, briefness and easy configuration. RIP works for the small scale and homogeneous networks. It's the best choice for campus and enterprise networks to adopt RIP. Routing technology is developing very fast and the old version of RIP has to update its technology contents to meet the new requirements of network. Studying RIP can provide a good model for developing and utilizing other routing protocols. At the beginning of this paper, the fundamental concepts and working principles are firstly introduced. And then different routing technologies are analyzed. On the basis of the above contents, the merits and shortcomings of RIP are given in order to analyze the application of RIP and discuss the technical issues of next generation RIP. With the information given in the above two parts, emphasis is put on the designing scheme of RIP system. The scheme of RIP system, which is based on the embedded operating system of VxWorks and MPC860, is figured out consequently. The scheme is compatible, easy to update and transplant. Finally, this paper describes the process of implementation for each module in RIP system and the process of RIP testing system.
