To enhance the efficiency of applications and improve the performance of IP network, ISPs resort to IP Multicast technologies wishfully. However, most multicast applications can only be applied in small networks nowadays. To implement large-scale multicast or multicast in the Intetrnet, it is necessary to slove the problems of domain partitioning and inter-domain forwarding. Therefore, the implementation of inter-domain or wide-area multicasting is important for the Internet Service Providers and router vendors. We have designed and implemented wide-area multicast routing protocols in the high-performance router, and conducted rather complete tests for the implementation. Specially, the following tasks were finished:1. Proposed the architecture of wide-area multicast routing implementation in high-performance routers.Based on a comprehensive comparison of several approaches to wide-area multicasting, the thesis adopts PIM-SM/MBGP/MSDP scheme and presents its implementation architecture in our high-performance router.2. Improved the existing implementation of intra-domain multicast protocols for our high-performance router project. We have completed the previous work of IGMP and PIM implementations, and conduted new cases to test them. The thesis describes the main data structures and function modules of the system, and probes into some engineering problems such as the interaction between contol plane and data forwarding plane, the handling of registration suspension, and the switch from RPT to SPT.3. Fulfilled the inter-domain multicast functions based on MSDP/MBGP in high-performace routers. Inter-domain routing is the core technology to accomplish wide-area multicasing. The thesis provides the overall structure to accomplish the inter-domain multicast routing, makes a detailed description of MSDP and MBGP in terms of their function modules, major data structure design and interface relationship bewteen different sub-systems.4. Conducted rather complete testing for the wide-area multicasting implementations. The tests include functional testing under real-world networking enviornments, conformance testing and performance testing, for the whole system and main routing protocols including PIM-SM, MSDP and MBGP.5. Studied some problems related with the wide-area multicasting. The thesis discusses several relevant issues, such as multicast network mangment and deployment and the shortcomings of MSDP protocol. We also provide a nice solution for IPv6 wide-area multicasting based on embedded RP technology.
