Metadata Registry In Digital Library

Metadata registry (MR) is a system to record, store, organize, manage many standard metadata about description of information collections, knowledge organization system, administration specification and information services. MR supports search, identification, integration, transform, reuse and mining of metadata.The thesis emphasis on two aspects of MR. Firstly, it analyzes the existing MR systems and summarizes their characters and functions. It then describes the typical MR-DCMI MR's design idea, technical methods and function modules, and builds DCMI MR's mirror site in China. Secondly, it describes the roles, categories, and basic functional structures of MR, discusses examples of MR based on manual register and retrieve ,such as DCMI MR, ROADS MR and DESIRE MR, and MR based on auto discovery and publish, such as ebXML registry, GoXML registry. Emphasis then is given to the analysis of logical design and technical mechanism of DCMI MR, and the mirror site in China of DCMI MR is built cooperating with library of Chinese Academy Institute of Science. Finally, the thesis describes the prospects of MR system, includes ISO/IEC 11179 standards as the basic supporting framework for MR and service registry based on web service.
