Metadata And Its Application In Information Organization Of Digital Library

Metadata arises from the organization and management of great quantities of networked information resources. It has six functions: description, location, searching, evaluation, selection and administration. Therefore metadata is applied in many domains such as Digital Library (DL), Archives, publishing industry, etc. DL is the most important domain in which metadata is used. In DL, there are all sorts of information resources, including traditional materials and digital resources. Metadata must be used to organize these resources in DL so that users can access the needed information quickly and correctly. Therefore, we can draw a conclusion that metadata plays an important role in Information Organization of Digital Library (DLIO).Based on the summarization of metadata, DL and DLIO, this paper illustrates the essentialness of metadata's application in DLIO, the organization structure of DL's information resources, metadata standard design and metadata creating in DL. After this, it introduces and analyzes the application of DC, MARC and Chinese metadata standard in DLIO and gives an applied case. At last, this paper makes some suggestions about the problems caused in the application of metadata in DLIO. In this paper, the author tries to provide theoretical guidance for the practice of DLIO in the development of our country's DL.
