A Research On Zhang Yuanji's Books Career

Zhang Yuanji was wellknown all over China as the pioneer of modern press field. Since he entered Business Press, he published many western books, textbooks and ancient books which not only remained and transtited the culture, but provided substance guarentee for opening people's consciousness. Zhang Yuanji was a successful publisher. He based his work of publishing ancient books on amount of delicate collating.What he did saved our national cutural heritage, solved scholor's difficulty for books, collected some rare books and made up the defect of Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Among his publication, collected writings of the Four Basic Branches of Literature and the Bainaben edition of The Twenty-Four Histories were the most important. What's more, he established Tongyi school library, Hanfenlow Tower, Easten Library and Hezhong Library. He accumulated a wealth of xperience about gathering and manging books, which provided reference for morden library career.This thesis devided his career into publishing, collating and collecting books. Based on lots of material, it analysed and induced the procedure and feature of Zhang Yuanji's publishing career. The thesis summarized Zhang Yuanji's publishing ideology, for example, he payed attention to edition election,quantity and variety.As a rigorous publisher, he attached importance to the first edition,used varied collating method flexibly, completely record collating result and collated all-sidely. Zhang Yuanji not only colleted books in order to apply them, but also was addicted to edition of Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty. He took care of books using scientific method all his life. He devoted himself to the career of books expecting to save our national culture.
