Mao Jin (1599-1659), who was a famous book-collector and great publisher between the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, was very fond of reading books. He used to be Zhu Sheng when he was young. After he could not pass the examination for selecting offcials several times, he gave up and began to devote himself to researching ancient books. He sold his fields and built JiGu Ge and MuGeng Lou at Seven-stars Bridge, where he worked at collecting all kinds of precious ancient books, collating and engraving ancient books all his life. He would rather spend much money for books, the total of which was 84 thousand. Mao collated and engraved 600 kinds of ancient books of Song and Yuan Dynasty under the name of JiGu Ge, including history, poetry, novels, notes and so on, which made him the person who had the most private engraving books in Chinese history, He was working at publishing books all his life and made outstanding contributions to spreading Chinese culture.Based on the others' researches on MaoJin, the catalogue of Mao's collating and engraving ancient books, some references related to him, the thesis makes a systematic summery and research into Mao's collating methods and characteristics, activities and characteristics of engraving, and appraisals on his collating and engraving ancient books.The thesis can be divided into four parts: The first part-Preface, will show the previous research of Mao's family, his life, his collecting books, together with his collating and engraving books.
