Metro Area Network (MAN) is one of the main field of developing and constructing of telecommunication optical transport network recently. Comparing with the technology of LAN or WAN, the technology of MAN is young but fast growing. Plenty kinds of Metro technique are developing at this time. Among them, Metro CWDM technique becomes one of the most competitive solutions due to its character of low cost, high bandwidth, service transparent, simple and flexibility.Firstly this thesis introduces the concept of MAN and analyses its main characters and service requirements. Then it compares the 3 kinds of mainstream MAN techniques. The Coast WDM technique is deeply addressed by its basic principle, advantage and status of current international study and standardization.As part of Alcatel's entirely optical metro network solution, Alcatel 1692 Metro Span Edge is the first product of CWDM technologies. Comparing with similar products of other vendors, 1692MSE provides a single, cost-optimized, managed platform, supporting different services, network topologies, traffic matrices and transparency to protocols. It can provide flexible, robustness and high efficient services due to its multi-rate tributaries, multiple protection strategies and pluggable optical interface design. In this thesis, system design, development and application of 1692MSE are deeply introduced. It also explains the some of design for the key technical problems.
