Along with the human being entering the telecommunication era, people are more and more dissatisfied with the CRT for its shortcoming such as big buck and great dissipation. Then, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology emerges as time requires and has become the main role in the plane-displaying domain. Compared with CRT, LCD is better for low-power dissipation, no radiation, stable images and so forth. With the recently rapid development of new technology, the price of it are getting cheaper and cheaper and occupy quite a great market. In fact LCD has become the substitute of CRT. Due to its own characteristics, each LCD equipment needs a driver IC.A RAM-mapping LCD controller and driver ASIC is introduced in this paper. It can be used in many ways such as ammeters, PDAs, calculators. Both the control module and the driver module are designed into one chip. In order to add the flexibility, the duty and bias control are designed to be modified through main controller, for example, 8031. So this IC can be used even if the coustmor use different panels. We combined the "bottom up" and "top down" design methods together during the designing course. This plan can shorten the R&D period and reduce the design cost. After the manufacture in shanghai beiling foundry, it proved to be a successful design. Now the product has been put to the market and much profit are made. The whole design relies on the CADENCE software and the IC is fabricated by shanghai beiling 1.2um CMOS line. The product has been successfully put into the market and taken the place of the product made in other countries. Compared with those products, it has the advantages of small square, lower power consumption and lower price. The IC is a 128 pattern (32x4), memory mapping, and multi-function LCD driver. The S/W configuration feature of it makes it suitable for multiple LCD applications including LCD modules and display subsystems. Only three or four lines are required for the interface between the host controller and the IC.
