Design & Application Of Auditory Display Development Platform

In the paper, we firstly point out the limitations of traditional data display technology from human computer interaction viewpoint. We put forward the significance of sonification, and retrospect the history and current status of sonification .Then, we introduce the theories, techonlogies and applications of auditory display. Later, we analyse the advantages and disadvantages of typical auditory display tools ,and predict the future trends in auditory display tools.We design ADK (Auditory Display toolKit), an auditory display development platform, to meet the diverse needs of sonification researchers of diverse computer ability, and to overcome some of the limitations of present auditory display tools. Much emphases is laid on the structure of ADK, and on the design and implement of interface of ADK's modules. Script function and mulltiple interact modes are two distinguishing features of ADK. We have not found any auditory display toolkit that support the two features before the time when we finished the paper.Based on ADK, we design three sonification application prototypes, i.e. sonification of car meter, electrocardiogram of white mouse and satellite remote sensing information.
