Space-time block coding is a new technique that combines coding, modulation and transmit diversity. It has been an ideal candidate for improving wireless communication performance and increasing data rates in systems with bandwidth constraints. This thesis introduces the concept of QOSMECs and proposes a new method to construct the square-matrix embeddable space-time block codes matrices based on the works of Tarokh, Alamouti and Jafakhani etc. Comparing to the previous works, the construction formulas presented here are much simple with the same performance of the matrices constructed. The theory of the QOSTBCs decoding is studied and a efficient algorithm with low complexity is presented. In addition, the properties of different types of STBCs are summarized and the performances are analyzed based on the simulation results from new perspectives.Furthermore, we investigate the STTD technique in WCDMA and describe the whole process of the coding, transmission and decoding in detail. Finally, we discuss the advantage and disadvantage of the application of the STBCs and point out the problems to be resolved.
