| Efficiency and safety is tied up to factory layout. Factory layout is important but complex. Traditional methods of layout are restricted by shortages such as single optimal object and unreadable result. So, there is an urgent requirement to find a new method to these problems. VR(Virtual Reality) has been applied in manufacturing for many years, excellent results had been achieved. VR was introduced to layout, improving layout with its powerful visualization and simulation ability. It can also be extended to production simulation and remote control. This dissertation addresses some important problems of VR based factory layout, and have developed a software system for virtual factory design and simulation.First of all, framework of virtual factory system and method for rapid construction of virtual factory are schemed out Specific investigations is deployed as follows:VR modeling .. OpenFlight file format for Vega platform are discussed. Differences between CAD model and VR model are compared. A method for generating VR model from 3D CAD model based on conversion software Poly trans is presented, accurate model can be achived with less time. For multi-work shop layout, a method of generating 3D layout models from 2D model is put forward; a software module that can convert AutoCAD file to 3D FLT model is developed.Behavior and properties of different equipment are identified. Different type of equipments is classified after similarities and differences are analyzed. A class library is implemented to simulate behavior of equipments using OO(Object Oriented) technology. This library forms the base of our virtual factory system, keep it open and extensible.Finally, VR-Factory prototype system is developed with C++Builder and Vega. A FMS is builded on this platform and simulation is demonstrated.Virtual factory is very hot in application of virtual reality. The VR-Factory prototype system discussed in this paper is far from prefect, but basal layout and simulation can be done on it.
