In recent years, with the rapid development of Internet techniques and multimedia techniques, the long-distance education that practices through the network is popularized and spread day by day. So a high-quality auxiliary courseware of teaching that is convenient to run on line is an essential condition for the long-distance education. This paper focuses on the research of the applying and developing the techniques in the three-dimensional courseware of teaching. At first the author introduces the general requires, principles and methods of making of multimedia courseware, and analyses and compares different tools for making multimedia courseware, and probes into the meanings of making three-dimensional courseware of the network, and then chooses Java 3D as the best technique for designing the three-dimensional courseware of the network.Java 3D technique is the expansion in the three-dimensional field of Java, is a Object Oriented computer language. It has a lot of functions of graphical display, and it can directly link with the function of the mouse and show the three-dimensional model interactively, and it can carry on treatment of subduing the latent and illuminating color of the figure, etc. In addition, like other Java programs, Java 3D program can run on the WebPages. So, the paper emphasizes the research and the practice of how the Java 3D techniques applying in the three-dimensional multimedia courseware. Here, the author firstly probes into how to utilize Java 3D to set up three-dimensional scene, three-dimensional geometric form and to design and add interactive function, etc. Secondly, the paper analyses the function and characteristic of other several typical three-dimensional techniques, such as: OpenGL, Microsoft Direct3D and virtual reality modeling language VRML, and it compares them with the three-dimensional techniques. Lastly, by giving the brief examples of the three-dimensional courseware, the paper discusses the applicationsof the Java 3D in dealing with the multimedia materials, three-dimensional animations and adding texture and geometric transform. The article summarizes the whole the contents and points out that there are wide applicable prospects of the combination of the Java 3D technique and the three-dimensional courseware. The technique is expected to develop more excellent three-dimensional visual courseware with the strong interactive functions, and apply it to the educational field.
