This dissertation put the concrete practices of the Short Story Magazine edited by Ye Shengtao into a rather independent literature and editorological context. On the basis of detailed records in history, this essay mainly used the method of evidence research to analyze the independence of Ye's editorial ideas inidividual cases and his contributions to the development of modern literature. This essay holds the view that the Novels Monthly of Ye Shengtao demonstrated his vivid editorial individuality.Firstly, compared with Shen Yanbing and Zheng Zhenduo, Ye Shengtao had his own characteristics in his literature views and more consciously assu med the identity of an editor. Therefore, his editorial work aimed at inspiration and was more rational and in line with the development law of literature and periodical medias.Secondly, he implemented his editorial purposes as an author. He brought up a galaxy of young authors with his superb editorial strategy and gradually reduced the proportion of authors in the Literature Research Association. At the same time, the author group of Novels Monthly also turned to diversified and from the relatively isolated conditions to inclusive ones.Thirdly, he upheld the view of an author and the professional editorial criteria in his choosing and editing manuscripts. The Novels Monthly in those days paid more attention to creative concepts in compositions and demonstrated an inclusive and integrated style, with its literature content expanded and theoretical orientation weakened. A variety of literature styles, proses and novels in particular, developed rapidly and vigorously.Fourthly, in line with its changes in content, the periodical enjoyed more artisitical designs and more regularized formalities. Ye Shengtao fully exerted the role of media in this periodical and expressed his attaching great important -ce to esthetic ideas in literature. In short, it was Ye Shengtao who boosted the Novels Monthly to be a mature periodical, both on content and form.
