The Study Of 1910-1920 "The Short Story Magazine" From The Viewpoint Of Media Ecology

This paper is based on the theory and perspective of Media Ecology and takes "The Short Story Magazine" in 1910-1920 as a typical study object. It analyzes how the literary media exerts an important influence on the literature in the corresponding environment by carrying out investigations on changes of literary media in the era and the symbiotic relationship between the literary media and politics, culture and literature interaction in a way of seeing only one spot. Therefore, the relationship between literature media, political situation, culture and literature is a focus of this paper for research. It attempts to explore the mutual interaction between literature media and politics, mutual melting and symbiosis between literary media and culture and the general rules of exchanges and co-existence between literary media and literature by the case study of "The Short Story Magazine" in 1910-1920 with the wish of being assisted by Media Ecology.In this paper, the reason why the theory of Media Ecology is introduced into the literature research is that the media perspective provided by Media Ecology has greatly changed the insufficiency of the understanding for media subject in literary research so that new change for its establishment of the subjectivity of the media in literary research is brought and further expansion of the research field of literary is realized. In this paper, Media Ecology is used to analyze the specific political status, cultural status and the situation of literature of "Novel Monthly" in 1910-1920. It combines the macro view and micro analysis to try to explain the answer of literary media responding to politics in that era, culture and literature and changes and the development triggered by the intertextuality and symbiosis between literature and literary media.Firstly, this paper sorts out the academic origin of Media Ecology and summarizes the key points of the theory and Media Ecology being highlighted and sorted out:the theory of "the Medium is the Message" aims at pointing out the nature of the media. The theory of "Media Bias" aims at exploring the relationship between media and politics. The theory of "The relationship between medium and culture" aims at putting forward the coexistence state of media and culture. The point of view of "the Media of Life Entity" aims at establishing the subjectivity of the media. The above theoretical points proposed and discussed are able to provide theoretical supports and cultivation for the specific analysis of "Novel Monthly" in 1910-1920.Secondly, from the perspective of the relationship between media and politics, this paper elaborates the political alienation and proximity of "The Short Story Magazine" by adopting the political bias theory of the media. What is more, it also analyzes the mutual responding and restraining relationship between politics and literature and its influences on the literature by combining the political situation of "The Short Story Magazine" and from the aspects of political bias and change, political expression and function in terms of the echo and restraint of "Revolution of Novel".Thirdly, this paper starts with the relationship between media and culture to analyze the construction of culture on the basis of the coexistence state between media and culture. According to the cultural characteristics of the times including "Eastward Spread of Western Culture" and "Chinese Learning as the Fundamental Structure, Western Learning for Practical Use " of "The Short Story Magazine", it analyzes the translation and dissemination of Western culture, the specific phenomenon of literature for the publicity and the dissemination of modern culture so as to explain the mutual existence relationship between the literature and culture and its influence on literature.Fourthly, the paper starts from the relationship between literature and media to establish the subjectivity of the media from the perspective of media ecology by which the scrutinizing of literature and the media is brought into the survey of the two subjects. By reviewing various relations between "The Short Story Magazine", writers’ works, literary journals and readers, it elaborates the coexisting and interaction between "The Short Story Magazine" and above relationships, as well as the mutually constitutive and interactive space. In the structure synchronic character, it aims to form a perception of this multi-dimensional and inter-textual relationship between the literature and the media. Thus, in the subjectivity reference of literature and media, the analysis about the influences of the subjective media on literature is analyzed.The last chapter of the paper provides academic reflections for the academic enlightenment and value from the perspective of the research on the "The Short Story Magazine" of Media Ecology. First, it is conductive to expand the research field of literature if the Media Ecology is included in the study of the literature, such as the study of the relationship between literature and politics resulted by political bias in literary media, the study of the relationship between literature and culture caused by the cultural orientation of the media, the study of literary criticism standard and critical attitude of media intervention; secondly, it is conductive to expand the idea of literature theory construction with new problems of the literature theory construction brought by the Media Ecology which is introduced into the literature research field; thirdly, it is conductive for the study of the inter-textual literature and the media. By carrying out the discussion of the relationship of interdependence, mutual stipulation and mutual construction between the literature and media, the new research space and orientation of literature and media are provided.
