"Whether the Chinese language level of middle school students is low" has always been a very concerned problem in the Chinese language education circle. In November 1934,the magazine "Middle School Students" triggered an eight-month "discussion on the degree of Chinese language among middle school students".In the 1940 s,this problem was still seriously troubling the Chinese language education circle.Chinese education in middle schools faced great difficulties as well as great challenges with a large number of teachers and students moved due to the outbreak of the All-round Anti-Japanese War.Ye Shengtao,a famous educator, founded the Chinese teaching publication "Chinese Literature" in Chengdu in 1942 to guide middle school students in Chinese, which was based on the social background at that time and the current situation of middle school students in Chinese at that time. After the publication of six issues in Chengdu, the publication was transferred to Guilin in order to improve the quality, expand the influence and increase the sales volume of the publication, with the assistance of Song Yunbin and Fu Binran, editors of Kaiming Bookstore. In 1946,the publication of the magazine was terminated. The Guilin edition published a total of 18 issues, plus the previous Chengdu edition 6 issues,a total of 24 issues were published."Chinese Literature" is positioned as "a monthly magazine to help middle school students learn Chinese".Ye Shengtao hopes to help middle school students learn the Chinese and provide them with methods. In addition to editor-in-chief Ye Shengtao,Lv Shuxiang,Wang Li,Zhu Ziqing,Bai Han,Ding Xiaoxian and others often write for the magazine. Many Chinese teachers in middle school also discuss Chinese teaching in the magazine. And educators such as Ye Shengtao gave enthusiastic and detailed responses."Chinese Literature" has also set up a special "Exercise Exhibition" for middle school students to display their compositions. The main content of "Chinese Literature" is about "how to learn Chinese",among which there are more contents about "reading teaching" and "exercise teaching".In addition,a discussion on “Rescue the Chinese Language” has been held in the magazine, which was a continuation of the discussion on "whether the Chinese language level of middle school students is low" in the 1940 s.At the same time, there is also a discussion on the "the debate of ancient and modern Chinese " in the magazine.Different scholars,Chinese teachers and middle school students have expressed different views on whether classical Chinese or vernacular Chinese should be studied in Chinese learning.Through these debates, various viewpoints can be fully expressed, the literature and education circles have deepened their understanding of relevant issues, and people who hold different positions and viewpoints can learn from each other and constantly improve the teaching of Chinese in middle schools. It can be said that we can get a very specific and in-depth understanding of the basic situation and methods of Chinese language learning of middle school students at that time,as well as the teaching thoughts of writers and educators such as Ye Shengtao,Zhu Ziqing,Wang Li and Lv Shuxiang in middle school. Therefore, the journal had both an important position in the Chinese teaching publications at that time, and a very important influence and role in the history of modern Chinese education.
