The Digital Visual Interface is a new communication standard for the emerging digital display technology. The main goal of this project is to use the power of the DVI interface as flexible as possible. The protocol of DVI is central clue of this paper. The logical architecture, protocol, the encoder algorithm, the decoder algorithm and the electronics specification of the TMDS which is the core of the DVI and means Transition Minimized differential signal are described in particular in this paper. And the synchronization and data recovering which mean the central problem in the high speed serial data communications are also analyzed. The circuit essential of the DVI is a kind of high speed serial data communications. So the transmission line theory and the Signal Integrity (SI) engineering technology is the most important elements in DVI circuit design. And knowledge about such technologies is also introduced.Chipset selection, the print circuit board design and the TMDS signal testing are the main most important process in the DVI realization. The real DVI circuit is used as a example to introduce and analyze the most common problems in DVI circuit design. And a simple but useful method is described carefully for the TMDS signal testing without using special instruments. The computer display interface technology has been developed for over twenty years. So without the background knowledge of the display technology and the VESA display standards, the realization of DVI will be impossible. Two chapters are used to introduce the develop background of the display technology and several necessary VESA standards. And in the end, a foresee is given for the DVI applications and this paper also tell us what the DVI is now.
