Nowadays, the Metropolitan area network (MAN) and its technology are developed rapidly as the result of the great development of data service. SDH is used widely in the MANs owing to its flexibility networking, perfect protection and powerful administration. However, SDH has already been proved to be not effective in transport data service because it is proposed for the optimal transport of TDM service, not data. On the other hand, Ethernet dominate the market of edge access for its low cost. The Ethernet is not a good solution, as it lacks of carrier-class protection and administration, which narrows its application in the backbone or aggregation layer in the MAN.Being an layer 2 protocol used for media access control, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) does not only inherit the economy advantage of Ethernet, administration and reliability advantages of SDH, but also introduces its unique characteristics, such as fairness access, topology discovery, guaranteed Quality of Service, which make it possible to optimize the transport of data packetThe Application of RPR Technology in the SDH-based MSTP can make full use of both the advantages of SDH and RPR in TDM and data service. So it will make a good transport platform for multiple services that can meet the need of new generation MANs.This paper studies the principles of RPR, analyzes the transport characteristic of service in the MANs, and introduces an implementation project to construct sharingEthernet rings in the SDH-based MSTP by using RPR technology. There are lots of technologies used in the system project,such as VLAN, LCAS, GFP and LAPS. SDH-based MSTP can build networks of rings or tangency rings, so it has strong ability of constructing networks, which means It may used for multiple service types such as point-to-point, multi-point-sharing or convergence. At the end of the paper, the system level software simulation is given, to validate the effectiveness of RPR.
