With the social transformation undergoing in contemporary China as the background in this era, the thesis gives a profound explanation of the relationship between mass media and social development in the perspective of social communications. As for the discussion of the relationship, educational circles usually focus on the interaction between the two- parties mentioned above, while placing the mass media movement in the macro background of social historical movement and making a thorough analysis of the movement and development rules of the two parties, this thesis attempts to probe into the intrinsic consistency between mass media movement course and social historical development by outlining the fields of China politics, economics and culture, as well as the characteristics and development trend of mass media in the process of social transformation. The thesis also infers and deducts the "mass media i.e. society" proposition to "mass media i.e. human beings ", clarifies that mass media is " media for the human beings " and that carrying forward value intentions, expressing humanism consideration are the principle prime foothold and the ultimate objectives of all journalism and communications activities. The thesis consists of three parts, the preface, the main body and the epilogue. The preface makes a brief analysis of the era particularities of contemporary China in social transformation, supplies the research background and objects, puts forward the argumentation, and presents the objectives and significances of the research. The main body is divided into three chapters which analyze the relationship between mass media and the development of politics, economics, culture in the perspectives of politics communications, economics communications and culture communications respectively. Chapter One, "mass media i.e. politics", by the analysis of characteristics of politics and media in China in early social transformation, demonstrates that mass media is a true reproduction of socialpolitical configuration and political ideology, and is a mirror of politics. Chapter Two, "mass media i.e. economics ", by the analysis of the direct impact of economics and the other social domains on mass media development, confirms in a reversing perspective that mass media is the condensation of the panorama of social and economic development and is the expression of economics. Chapter Three, "mass media i.e. culture", by the description of social culture trend in contemporary China and cultural characteristics, trend, analyzes the consistency of the trend of both parties turning from politics-oriented to humanism-oriented and the close relationship of inter-amalgamation of them. And puts forward the argumentation that mass media in social transformation is not only segments of culture, but also the reduction of social culture. The epilogue is a sum-up of the thesis. The development course of mass media and changes in the course is, in fact, the true reduction of social historical status in a particular period. The course, to some degree, reflects the development course of the whole society. And the mass media history is also the reduction of social history, the two of them is intrinsically consistent with each other, therefore, mass media is society. To be further, the thesis holds that the social development course reflected by mass media development course is essentially the development course of human beings, mass media history is not only the reduction of social history, but also that of human beings, therefore, mass media is human beings. The significance to reveal the relationship between mass media and society this proposition intents is elevated to a new height, that is, the research of relationship between mass media and the human beings. And the thesis attempts to provide some feasible suggestions by pointing out that human beings-oriented, the conveyance of humanism are the fundmental mission of mass media.
