The reconstruction projects of the control system for converter vanadium abstraction was set by Pangang Corporation to meet the market requirements and to ensure safety.  The project includes two main parts: the basic automation system and the process information management system. This thesis is mainly devoted to the study of the basic automation system. The process of converter vanadium abstraction and the electro-mechanic characteristics of the main production devices are described first. Then the control requirements of the process are analyzed in detail. The thesis gives deep studies on the control system design. A suitable control system structure is proposed and the whole system is designed and implemented. After introduces to modern control technologies of Distributed Control Systems, Field Buses, Industrial Ethernet, the thesis constructs a control system for converter vanadium abstraction based on Fiber Industrial Ethernet, PROFIBUS-DP, Siemens S7 PLC and General Purpose Industrial PCs. The detailed design of some main control functionalities, such as desulfurizing control, inverter oxygen lance control and inverter bending control, are also proposed.The project begins in 2000, and completed in 2001. The control system resulted in very good performances, satisfies the requirements of the process for inverter vanadium abstraction. The product outputs reached the designed outputs right in the first month.  The success of the reconstruction project has got very good economic benefits, as well as social effectiveness. It also provides an effective mode and method for implementation of other reconstruction projects in Pangang Corporation in the future.
