A fundamental shift has occurred in the way businesses go about using information systems for their competitive advantage. New techniques, such as business process reengineering, are leading to systems reengineering. And as businesses decentralize and downsize, information systems follow suit. A strategy being adopted is to flatten the management hierarchy by eliminating of layers of middle management and empowering the remaining individuals. To make the strategy successful information to support rational decision-making must be made available to these individuals with ease. Information technology (IT) is an effective vehicle to support the implementation of this strategy; frequently it is not used effectively. The client/server model provides power to the desktop, with information available to support the decision-making process and enable decision-making authority.Designing and implementing an effective three-tier client/server system to support the above-mentioned new business paradigm is the focus of this document. A prototype system was built using the business transaction of the Ghana Commercial Bank as the case studies. Since client/server computing is an overused buzzword and for that matter people in the IT industry have used it to describe almost every conceivable form of computing, this document also mention at length what characterized a client/server computing.
