Embedded system, which is as old as computer itself, emerged about forty years ago. It has been used in the field of communication for a long time. As the incessant development of information technology, especially the rapid expand of Internet, the embedded system is more and more widely used. It brings new interests for research on embedded system and embedded software. From the 1990's, Internet and mobile communication change the world profoundly. It seems promising to join them together, meaning to get the WIT (wireless information terminal) connected into the Internet through wireless network. However, wireless network is quite different from traditional computer network, such as market application, bandwidth and terminal capabilities, etc. There are a lot of difficulties to implement the wireless mobile interconnection, especially the design of WIT and its embedded software. It brings new challenges to embedded system and embedded software technology. These years, researchers both home and abroad have done lots of theoretical researches on embedded system and mobile communication. They proposed several protocols and standards to implement the wireless mobile interconnection, as well as developed some WIT products, but no unified software architecture and reusable software framework exist. In this thesis, we describe our work on embedded system and embedded software in wireless mobile network. We firstly summarize the characteristics and computing models of embedded system, and then discuss the requirement, method, environment and procedure of the design and development of embedded software.-ii-Based on our analysis of software architecture and relative design patterns of WIT, we propose a configurable and scalable software framework for WIT. In the end, we present the design and implementation of WAP (wireless application protocol) software as an example of embedded software for wireless mobile interconnection. We own the independent knowledge property for this software and have made it a product, which has been integrated in mobile phone of KONKA. Its performance is better than the same kind of product abroad.
